Heating and cooling can account for about half of a home’s total utility bill. By upgrading to a high-efficiency system, you can cut your energy costs while keeping your family perfectly comfortable.
Use our energy savings calculator to see how much you can save.
What is SEER?
SEER stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. It’s a measure used to rate the efficiency of air conditioning and heat pump systems. The higher the SEER rating, the more efficient the unit, which also translates to lower energy costs.
National energy efficiency standards require a minimum SEER rating on all air conditioners sold and installed. As of January 2023, the minimum SEER requirement is 14 or 15, depending on where you live, though many modern HVAC units boast ratings in the 20s.
See How Much Money You Can Save
Simply input your current HVAC’s SEER rating (usually a yellow sticker labeled “Energy Guide”), your utility’s energy cost (from a recent bill), and your region into the calculator. Then use the slider to see how much you can save by upgrading to a unit with a higher SEER rating.
Why Are SEER Ratings Important?
It’s important to put regulations on appliances that use a significant amount of energy—it not only helps reduce environmental impact, but it saves billions of dollars in energy costs to consumers. Requiring minimum SEER ratings on heating and AC units ensures reliable and efficient products are brought to market.
- Lower Energy Bills: The higher the SEER rating, the more money you can potentially save.
- Reduced Environmental Impact: More efficient units consume less energy, leading to a reduction in overall greenhouse gas emissions.
- Government Incentives: You can claim up to 30% of the cost of a new, high-SEER HVAC unit on your taxes between 2022-2023.
How Are Ratings Calculated?
SEER ratings are calculated by taking the total amount of heat removed from a home during a typical cooling season and dividing it by the total electrical energy the system used during the same cooling season.
Every new air conditioner brought to market must undergo special testing to determine its SEER efficiency rating. New testing requirements rolled out in 2023 have resulted in even more accurate SEER ratings, which is referred to as SEER2 to differentiate from units tested under the old requirements.
