Why You Can’t Clean and Replace a Disposable Air Filter

Your HVAC system’s air filter is a critical component that helps keep your air healthy and clean. It works hard every day to trap the dust, dander, pollen, and other pollutants that are circulating throughout your house. If you have a disposable filter, its lifespan is over when it becomes dirty and clogged. There are several important reasons why you can’t clean a standard air filter.

Disposable Vs. Reusable Air Filters

There are two basic types of air filters for your HVAC system. A disposable filter is a one-time-use product that’s typically effective for between one and three months. After that time, it will become too clogged with dust, dirt, and debris to function efficiently.

A reusable air filter is made from more durable materials. Every one to three months, you can remove this filter and carefully wash it to remove the accumulated dust, irritants, and pollutants. Though your system works the same with both types of filters, it’s important to know which you’re using.

Cleaning Disposable Filters

A disposable filter is so named for an important reason. When you’re done using this filter, you need to dispose of it and install a fresh, new replacement. Disposable air filters are made from soft mesh and other flexible materials that simply can’t stand up to the wear and tear of a good washing. It won’t dry efficiently after washing either, creating a damp breeding ground for mold and mildew.

It’s far easier to toss the old filter in the trash and pop in a fresh replacement when the time is right. If you don’t want to put your filter in the trash, upgrade to a reusable option that’s designed to stand up to water, soap, and vacuuming.

If you’re having trouble with a filter that’s become excessively dirty right away, have one of our technicians check to see if your ducts are the problem. Contact Ellington Air Conditioning & Heat at (321) 222-0605 for a prompt diagnosis and solution for cleaner air.
